Music Promo Task
Rihanna – Pour it up – school = LOCATION – THEME – Stereotypes
-- Instead of what people will think the video being
based on strippers at a club and men just throwing away money on drinks and
girls, women in tight dresses and stuff, I wanted to move it away from that but
make it similar like an everyday thing but based on this generation. So I
decided to base it in a college or even secondary school and show the how the
new generations act just as similar as older adults at a club. It will basically be one student analyzing
the whole comparison between students at a college/secondary to adults at a
party. Girls with shorts skirts and tops tied up behind them, the hood boys,
the teachers representing the college school drop outs. However you got the
students that are not about all those stuff and are on their work ‘money on their
mind’ linking to their education and future career.
The performance of the music promo
will be slow motion walk that speeds up in sections towards the school walking
through the school gates watching the school itself which will be shown as a
normal school but the closer the student walks towards it flashes off and on
from a school scene to a club scene. Walking down the corridors , each corridor
represent something new ……… school outfits – flashes to the stereotypical party
outfits and theme.
Actors – extra’s to act like normal
students 7 maybe or less don’t want to over exaggerate as it’s just a small
video, dancers , 3 main characters walking down the corridor , groups – sluts /
street rats/ gangsters / sneaky / innocent type/ druggies / alcoholics ect
Props – school equipment etc.
RoxXxan – LMNT – house party = LOCATION – THEME - A love story gone wrong, an original boy moves to girl
scenario and the boy is basically looking for one thing. Start off as a normal
party scene , some slow motion movement e.g. jumping, people having a good
time, the camera then moves its way through the dance floor to the main
character who is sitting on top of a chair with a bunch of her mates rapping
the story line, as it is played out in front of her. Very simplistic.
ADOT – Detention –work = LOCATION – THEME- Ambiguity ---- I want to make detention look like it can be
represented anywhere and with anyone , as students have detention in school and
always try find a way to get out of it , I want to present how the feel of
detention can happen also at a work place, feeling almost locked up, dancers
representing how the bosses have control over their colleagues and how they are
in control ( dancing style would be krump to show a sense of control and
aggression) and the adult is literally almost a puppet on a string following
their every demand. ZooNation ‘Some like it hip hop’ theatre performance
inspired this idea of mine, that I really enjoyed and the concept behind it was
genius. I had two ideas for this either it has a slip two sided day of a
student’s school detention while showing an adults work life as a detention
while symbolising the students grown up life in not getting away from detention
that easy, as its not only in school but at the workplace. My second idea was
two students in a class room detention with the teacher overlooking them, the
clock stops and it blurs into a work scene and its goes on from there as the
students grown up at work, basically conveying the same concept of not getting
away from the signs of detention.
Actors – 2bosses,
a few extras for actors at work, two main characters as the puppets on the
string as colleagues, 3 different work outfits.
B)
o
Party feel / R&B / Hip hop / dance
o
Mise en scene – abandoned warehouse fixed up as
a video set – Bright lights, White back drop – represents new beginning and her
being herself in front the camera puts across her message as an individual and
her just being herself and not caring about the haters , she just doing her and
showing everyone who she is.
o
Costume – simple sophisticated sexy dance wear –
triangular golden earrings, crop top and high waist black tight shorts
represents her femininity through her body language. Also within some parts in
the video she has ‘prints’ all over her body that can suggest or symbolise her
journey to finding herself and actually accepting who she is and showing
everyone the real her and what she loves to do.
o
Camera angles – Starts off with an tracking
establishing shot of the artist in Mid shot walking showing the location of the
video shoot surroundings, leading up to the presences of the artist from the
low key light to the high key white light connotation of purity. The close ups
and the extreme close up present the artists appearance and facial expression
innovating her attitude reflecting on the music theme which comes across as
fierce through her natural complexion adding to her makeup and costume. The
long shots show the artist whole body language and movement, being a female she
presents her body language very sexy and fierce but conveying a strong
presences which also can be a disadvantage of the portrayal of females as men
seeing females as sexual items. The mid shot of (Male artist) Big Sean with the
low key light and black background shows a sense of masculinity through the
change from Jessie j’s high key lighted white background to a low key back
background. Long shot of Jessie with the paw prints imprinted over her body was
based in a low key light but around her a high key light revolves around her
showing her sense of individualism and control over the masculine environment.
The wide shot of the artist in the centre and the plain white background in the beginning of the video, emphasises the
artists presence with the area around her symbolising life, even though she is
one small individual she’s still willing to take on life as a whole. The
cutting rate starts off slow in the beginning and speeds up showing a sense of
her development as an artist and her wild vibe representing her wild
personality as a whole. The two shot of her and the male artist shows her
control and main existences within the video as she is in focus while the make
artist is blurred out behind.
o
Yes Lip synching looks like it is used within
the video, it’s styled out very well by
bringing the camera back into a long shot and taking their eyes off it which
links to her outrageous talent and personality she shows through her dancing.
o
Motif and theme – living life to its fullest,
appreciating what you got, never giving up , improvements, dreams , goals and
ambitions, this is portrayed through the vibe of the music and the lyrics.
Audience feedback on the video could see the artist as showing her
individuality through her confidence, she just basically showing her fans and
audience the real her and how she is just enjoying her life, however some may
see it as cocky and not necessary, as the public seem to take certain actions
in different ways that make the artist come off as not being someone she’s not
just to bring in viewers and fans.
o
The target audience would be directed at fans of
the artist, people that like a good party feel music, They encouraged people to
buy the music by making the song and the video lively and fun, they added
things that people are interested in that catches their attention. Even the
other artist within the song have fan which invite more fans to take a look at
the other collaborators within the video which brings in more views.
o
Hip hop dance feel / party
o
Camera – It starts off with a tracking shot of a
car driving, showing the location and the surroundings in a low key light. It
then moves on to a shot reverse shot of a low angle to a high angle shot of the
conversation between the Chris brown and an actor showing status levels between
the two. The Mid shot shows facial expression and appearance and the location
in the car and everyone’s individual difference among each other, the men in
the front seats while the women are in the back seat not much seen as suggest a
sense of masculine control. The cutting rate begins slow and soon speeds up
after the music begins creating the party club scene vibe. The over the
shoulder shot showing the conversation and interacting between the Chris and
the male actor. The establishing shot of the car parking outside the club
conveys location and ‘night party’ vibe through the low key light shadowing the
high key light of the lights from the club. The wide long shots of Chris shows
off his dancing following on to a two shot with the different types of girls he
dances with and the styles of dance he portrays within the video representing a
multicultural look on the video, while still showing the location of the party
scene of people dancing in the background. The cutting rate has a balance of
slow and fast speeds, for example when Nickii Minaj appears the cutting rate
speeds up due to her fast rapping which speeds up the tempo creating a dancing
vibe to the song. The mid shots and the close ups of the artist shows his
facial appearance and his mood and his main importance within the video. The
mid, long and close up shots of the artist are used to present the artist in
different lights and to showcase his talent and what the audience knows him
best for. The main artist’s representation through the long shots of his
dancing which he is best known for and his close ups of his facial expression
which appeals to the women with his masculine appearance. The female artist
representation is shown through her long shots to present her figure and
appearance of her femininity which is most appealing to men and some women who
see her as a role model. However some of the public can look across as the
female artist’s appearance as men looking at women as objects and focusing more
on their appearance and what they have on their body more than anything.
o

Slow jam/ dance feel club music / sexy/ house
party
·
Camera – begins with an extreme close up which
shows facial expressions of her sexual and fierce attitude and flirtatious
feminine behaviour portraying the slow tempo vibe of the music. It then moves
its way into a long shot of her silhouette which presents her body language
surrounded in a low key within a high key light, this can be seen as sexy but
have its disadvantages with the male audience seeing the artist as a sexual
object giving females a label. The cut in emphasises her appearance and details
which brings emphasis on her hair and make up. Ciara comes across as
representing herself to the public through what they know her best for which is
her dancing and that’s what moved her to where she was. The cutting rate speeds
up and slows down due to the music tempo’s intimate vibe and clubbing feel. The
establishing shot presents the location at a house party with mid shots and
slow motion of people having a good time and just enjoying themselves. We then
go into a mid-shot of the male artists which presents their mutual relationship.
The close up of the Dench headphones promotes the headphones, audience seeing
in ciara’s video makes them want to consume the product due to her status in
the industry. The long shot and mid-shot of the artists dancing in the centre
of the party scene stresses her sexual intimacy through her body language and
movement while tracking her movement towards the male artist. The shot reverse
shot and the over the shoulder shot presents a conversation between the two
artists suggesting their relationship within the video. The panning long shot
of Ciara in black lace lingerie presents her sexual nature through her movement
and mid shot attitude and facial expressions towards her male companion
suggesting their relationship.

heels show silhouette– No sleeved baggy top with Jox genii trousers and heels
with gold hoop earrings with ray bands, other dancers wearing crop top with
baggy jeans etc. Bedroom scene – launderette
·
Lip synching isn’t noticeable , especially in
the beginning when she is basically just talking
·
Motif and theme – sexual reference – to her body
being her man’s party and her being the only one invited, this can be criticised
on the labelling of women and only getting attention through their image.
·
Target audience is people who are Interested in
slow jams and that kind of vibe music scene, also people who are fans of the
artist.
